Greenhouse missive

In January of 1974, Bob and Pat Ruf bought 155 feet of sagebrush-covered road frontage on S. Curry St., far from downtown Carson City and started Greenhouse Garden Center. The location is still the same and the Ruf family is still bringing to Northern Nevada quality plants, beautiful fountains and statuary, unique gifts from our gift shop and an award-winning full service design and installation landscape division.

Ruff family Bob and Pat Ruf came to Nevada by way of Massachusetts. By the age of 14, Bob was the State Beekeeper for Massachusetts. They both earned undergraduate degrees there, and Bob earned his Doctorate Degree in Horticulture from Cornell University.

Bob suffered from bad allergies and the family doctor finally convinced him that he and Pat needed to move West and so in true pioneering spirit they settled in Reno in the early 1960's before Kietzke Lane was a paved road. At the University of Nevada, Reno, Bob was very instrumental in establishing the horticulture program at the College of Agriculture with Dick Post. He was the leading authority on growing potatoes, onions, and garlic in Nevada as well as developing commercial potential for growing grapes in Nevada.

In 1967 Bob, Pat, and their two sons traveled to Mogadishu, Somalia, where they lived for two years. Bob was involved in a government funded program aimed at teaching farmers techniques for increased crop yields. Upon their return to Reno, Bob once again taught at the University of Nevada, Reno and Pat was an elementary school teacher. In 1973 Bob took a year sabbatical and worked at Arlington Nursery to gain experience in retail operations. The rest, as they say, is history!

David and Julie Bob and Pat Ruf owned Greenhouse Garden Center until 1994, when they retired, passing the family business and their love of plants to their son, David Ruf. David started working at the family business when he was 13. He received his degree in Horticulture from Colorado State University. After that he worked a fall and winter in the B & B growing fields of Oregon learning the growing, digging, and shipping side of the business. After that, he did a year internship at Eisley Nursery in Oregon.

Under David's leadership Greenhouse Garden Center has truly stepped into the 21st century. David has carried the family tradition of providing excellent horticultural materials and services to Northern Nevada. David has two sons; perhaps one of them will carry on the family business. David and his wife Julie are committed to bringing quality lifestyle choices to Nevada families. LANDSCAPE DESIGN WORKSHOP 2014

INSTRUCTOR: David Ruf, Owner, Greenhouse Garden Center
DATES: Saturdays, Jan. 25 & 26, and Session 5 by appointment
TIME: 10:00 am to 3:00 pm (Sessions 1 through 4)
COST: $125.00/person or $175.00/couple - RESERVATIONS REQUIRED (class size limited to 16)
WOW: Any person attending the workshop will receive 15% off any landscape plants purchased during the 2014 season. Lunch will be provided on Jan. 25 and Jan. 26. All classroom materials will be provided.
SESSION 1: January 25 - 10:00 am to 12:00 pm

This session will begin with landscape design decisions. The discussion will consider each homeowner's special circumstances and will include new landscape construction as well as renovating existing landscaped areas. Discussion and review of garden styles, home styles and existing landscape considerations specific to the individual homeowners life style, home style and color and general likes and dislikes will be identified. The homeowner should be prepared with square footage of the area and photographs of the property.

LUNCH BREAK - 12:00 pm to 12:45 pm
SESSION 2: January 25 - 12:45 pm to 3:00 pm

This session will involve helping each homeowner develop a site plan. Topics will include site location, exposure, slopes, grading and drainage issues, irrigation installation and electrical requirements. Each homeowner will receive a Nevada Plant Guide as an aid to making good plant choices. Homework will involve plotting the hardscape on the site plan.


SESSION 3: January 26 - 10:00 am to 12:00 pm

During this session drip and sprinkler considerations will be customized to each homeowner's needs. Also, lawn, soil condition and amendments, fertilizers, plant care and watering issues will be addressed. In addition, hardscape landscaping such as pavers, patios, ponds, lighting, statuary, and benches will be discussed. Homework will involve plotting irrigation lines on the site plan.

LUNCH BREAK - 12:00 pm to 12:45 pm
SESSION 4: January 26 - 12:45 pm to 3:00 pm

This session will revolve around tree and plant selection. There will be a tour of the nursery to view various trees and shrubs. In addition there will be pictures of plants in optimal seasonal situations. Decisions on where to place plant species in site plans will be done. Finally, a cost analysis will be developed for the homeowner. Homework will involve placement of trees and planting beds on the site plan.


SESSION 5: By Appointment

The final session will be devoted to a review of the homeowner's personal landscape designs. Modifications will be made where necessary. This session will also be used as a catch-up session for those homeowners who need additional help.




LOTS OF SEEDS TO MEET ANY GARDENERS NEEDS

For gardeners, weary of winter and anxious to start planning for the next growing season, perusing seed catalogs and selecting seeds provides the perfect way to pass the time until spring arrives. Better then looking at seed catalogs, why not come in and select from the seeds we carry from Botanical Interests, Burpees, and Olds' Seeds. All of the seeds are packaged for 2014 and the selection is great. Each of these seed lines have great reputations in the industry and offer many heirloom and organic seed options.

Each year it's exciting to see what new seeds the seed scientists have come up with and to try new varieties of vegetables and flowers in our gardens. New varieties for this year include Papaya Dew Melon, Cube of Butter Summer Squash, Sweet Dumpling Winter Squash, Painted Hill Sweet Corn, Calypso Bush Bean, Yellow Buttons Daisy, and Northern Lights Blend Zinnia.

Since 1995, Botanical Interests seeds, a family run business has been providing quality seeds to gardeners. Every Botanical Interests seed packet is designed to help gardeners succeed and along with a beautiful botanic rendering of each variety includes facts, tips and even recipes. Burpees has been in business since 1881 and their seed catalogs have been cherished in gardeners homes for generations. Olds' Seeds is a new seed line to Greenhouse Garden Center this year but certainly not to the industry since this company has been in business since 1888. Olds' Seeds are only sold at independent garden centers and cannot be purchased through catalogs or online.

 
MELT IN YOUR MOUTH FRUIT TREES FOR 2014

Each year it is fun to see what the plant scientists in the growing industry have come up with that will be available public for the next season. David and Nancy put their heads together and research what will work in our area and each year bring an impressive group of new plants in for our customers here in Northern Nevada.

This year Matsuda's is growing several varieties of semi-dwarf fruit trees that will be new to us and this area. They will be arriving in June. Semi-dwarf fruit trees are a medium sized tree ranging in height from 10'-16'. They require a growing area of at least 15' in diameter. Usually very productive, they do require annual pruning to keep height and shape.

Burgundy Apple:
This apple was introduced at Cornell University and is a cross between a Macoun and Antonovka. Burgundy apple has a glossy, dark red skin that resembles a large Bing cherry. The flesh is a cream color, firm and very juicy. It is a mid season bloomer (late March into early April) and the fruit is ready for picking in mid-September. The ripe fruit will hang well on the tree for at least three weeks allowing for picking over an extended period. Burgundy apple requires 500-600 hours chilling below 45F. This apple requires a pollinator such as Gala, Red Delicious, or McIntosh. Burgundy apple is best used for eating or juicing.

Le Grand Nectarine:
The Le Grand nectarine produces a large sized fruit with a rich, sweet flavor. The skin is yellow with a red blush. This clingstone is good for just about anything including eating. It cooks, dries, and freezes well. The Le Grand blooms in mid-spring and ripens in late July and early August. It requires 900 hours of chilling below 45F. Nectarines are self pollinators.

Ruby Grand Nectarine:
The Ruby Grand nectarine wins all taste tests, universally described as melting in your mouth. This freestone nectarine has large, yellow skin with a bright red flush. The flesh is yellow, firm and juicy. It cooks, dries, and freezes well. The Ruby Grand blooms in mid-Spring and ripens in late June and early July. It requires 700-800 hours chilling below 45F. Nectarines are self pollinators.

Belle of Georgia Peach:
The Belle of Georgia is an old time favorite dating back to 1870 but new to us. It blooms in mid-spring with bright pink to brilliant red blossoms. The fruit ripens in August. This white fleshed freestone produces a medium sized peach with pale yellow skin and a red blush. It requires 800 hours of chilling below 45F. Peaches are self pollinators.

Fortyniner Peach:
The Fortyniner peach is a mid-sized, yellow flesh freestone peach. The skin color is yellow with a large red blush. Harvest this peach in late July to early August. It requires 700 hours of chilling below 45F. Peaches are self pollinators.

Loring Peach:
The Loring peach is a large, yellow flesh freestone peach. The flavor has been described as sweet, melting in the mouth juicy. Harvest this peach in August. It requires 800 hours of chilling below 45F. Peaches are self pollinators

Autumn Rosa Plum:
The Autumn Rosa plum is a late ripening variation of the Santa Rosa plum. This plum is a medium to large, heart-shaped, purplish-red plum with an amber cast. It ripens in September and is self fertile. It require 500 hours of chilling below 45F.

Golden Necter Plum:
This award winning plum produces an extra long large golden plum. Harvest this plum in late July. It requires 500 hours of chilling below 45F. This plum requires a pollinator and Santa Rosa is one of the most versatile pollinators.

Jujube:
David hopes to bring in two varieties of Jujube, also known as Chinese date. These fruit trees are very forgiving of our desert environment and require very few hours of chilling needed to set fruit. The fruits are best eaten fresh, dry or candied. The fruit ripens non-simultaneously which means that harvesting occurs over an extended period of time starting in mid-summer and extending into September.

 
WHAT'S HOT FOR GARDENING 2014

David and Julie have been to several markets this past fall and will be bringing some great new products and expanded lines to the 2014 gardening season. Grow beautifully with M brace, a set of 4 metal braces artfully designed to be used to make raised beds. We have had so many people asking last year for food grade diatomaceous earth and this season we will be able to offer it. Look for the Wonder Grip line of nitrile palm coated gloves in two different lines, Nicely Nimble and Nearly Naked, in a variety of bright colors. Welcome to Worm Gold Wormcastings, high quality worm castings for improved plant health and growth. David found two new critter controllers, Deer Stopper 100' Pre-treated Barrier Ribbon (perfect for vegetable gardens) and Bird-B-Gon Woodpecker Kit, both organic alternatives. Safer Brand End All Insect Killer is an organic approach to houseplant insect control killing insects in all stages from eggs to adults. Earth Boxes are coming in exciting new colors like eggplant and lime as well as the terracotta to brighten up your patio gardens. Look for expanded products in the Sun Blaster Grow Light Gardens, a bridge line to hydroponic gardening. All this and more will be available this season. Mykos is a very specific, super species of mycorrhizal fungi that works faster and creates stronger roots in plants. David will be introducing these products in our Saturday seminar series. TOP TEN LIST FOR GARDENERS TO DO IN JANUARY/FEBRUARY

  1. Dig organic materials into your vegetable and flower gardens for bigger crops and more efficient water use. Paydirt, Bumper Crop and Black Forest Compost are three blended organic mixes that are perfect for flower and vegetable beds. One bag of any of these organic mixes will be enough for 50 square feet.
  2. Apply Bonide Tree and Shrub and Insect Control on ornamental deciduous trees. This once a year application will control aphids and elm leaf beetles and Bronze Birch borer. Apply Bayer Fruit, Citrus & Vegetable Insect Control to fruit trees and vegetable gardens for annual insect control.
  3. Reserve Mason Bees now. They are early pollinators which start pollinating long before honeybees come out of hibernation. A limited supply will be arriving mid-March.
  4. It is time to fertilize your lawn. Dr. Earth Lawn Food is 100% organic and contains beneficial mycorrhizae and microbes.
  5. There is still time to spray dormant oil and lime sulfur fungicide on fruit trees and roses to suffocate over-wintering insects and control disease..
  6. Continue to apply Kaput Rat & Mouse Bait to control voles, if you have noticed runways in your turf or live near an open field.
  7. Start planting cool season crops in the garden. Carrots, peas, onions, cabbage and lettuce are some early season favorites. For a complete list of cool season crops, come into Greenhouse Garden Center and we will be happy to give you that hand-out.
  8. Spray Florel once a week for 3 weeks on the greenish flowers on elms and cottonwood and red flowers on silver maples. NO SEEDS, NO COTTON AND NO BOXELDER BUGS!
  9. New garden stock is arriving every week. It's time to start to think about landscaping!
  10. Remove 80% of the salt water from the pond for healthy fish and plants. Add fresh water slowly over a 2 week period.

Pumpkin Spice Cheese Cake

What You'll Need:

  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup canned pumpkin
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
  • 8 ounces whipped topping
  • 1 (9-inch size) graham cracker crust

Step by Step:

  • Beat cream cheese, pumpkin, sugar and pie spice with mixer on medium speed until well blended.
  • Gently stir in whipped topping.
  • Spoon into crust. Chill 3 hours or overnight.
  • Garnish as desired.
